Friends

Devin has so many friends, and is such a good friend too!!! When Devin is with her friends she loves to dance, jump on the trampoline, play school and play with her dolls. It is so much fun spending time with Devin!!! Devin loves it when her friends come over for a movie-night.

When Devin started school, I was very worried about her making friends.  Since I was in second grade, I was not on the same floor as her class, so I would ask my teacher a lot if I could go to her kindergarten class.  My mom said that I wrote all of my writing projects in class about Devin.   My mom also told me that when she asked me why I wrote about Devin so much, I told her that I was worried about her making friends and how the kids would treat her.   Then one day I went to her class to read them a book, and I saw her playing with some kids in her class and they were laughing and playing and I knew that Devin was happy with her new teacher (she was also my kindergarten teacher) and friends!

Now when I see Devin I only see laughter and smiles. I think that Devin's friends are lucky because they are learning that it is not a big deal to have Down syndrome.  So if someone asks them about it, they can just say, well, I have a friend who has Down syndrome and I like her, we have fun together.

Sometimes I think it is hard to get to know Devin.   But usually when I see Devin she is making new friends and isn't shy.  She walks up to people and hugs them or says Hi, I'm Devin, or she makes a silly face.   The hard part is that if you don't already know her, it can be difficult to understand her when she talks to you.  The kids might be confused, but we always try to help her use her words to talk to them.   People are mostly nice to her, but once in a while someone might be mean, and I don't like it.   If that happens, I do my best to make Devin feel better first and then I tell the person to knock it off.
